Jibo / The first robot being developed for life at home

posted in Robotics by Matt on Thu Jul 17 2014

Meet Jibo, he is the first lifestyle assisting "family" robot to be developed through popular crowdfunding site Indiegogo.

Check out the video below...

The company founded by Cynthia Breazeal looks to revolutionise the world of home robotics and by the looks of things they've kept this very quiet until recently and have really got their bases covered. With consumer units launching in Q3 2015 it makes for a very exciting time.

Now we've all seen iRobot (I love that film) but it does through up some previously far fetched security and privacy concerns. This robot looks to integrate directly with your life. This includes your home, all devices and with learning algorhythms could it take over EVERYTHING?

I know i'm probably over thinking this but they really are going to hit the ground running. With developer SDK's ready and a JIBO store where you can buy apps (they're known as Skills) to expand Jibo's functionality.

Here are some comments from Indiegogo at the moment ....

We can't wait to see what happens with this but everyone please remember the 3 laws of Robotics (as set out by iRobot and of course Isaac Asimov)

  1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
  2. A robot must obey the orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law
  3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law
